In their Science lessons this week, the children in Year 4 have continued their learning about Ecology with an investigation into the effects of deforestation. We learned how to plan and demonstrate a comparative experiment, whilst also applying rules of fair testing. Our experiment was an attempt to answer the following enquiry question:
How does human activity affect habitats?
Habitats are sometimes destroyed when people want to use the land for a different purpose. Deforestation is an example of this: trees from forests are cut down to clear the land for farming or housing. The trees and their roots stabilise the soil, so removing them leads to soil erosion, which can lead to flooding because deforestation has made the land less able to cope with heavy rain. Erosion and flooding can also have a devastating effect on habitats.
