Stone age archaeologists

Stone Age Archaeological Dig

Published on 19th March

As part of our history topic, year 1 pretended to be archaeologists to learn how we find out about the past. We carefully searched for different items buried in the sand, then looked at what we found, deciding what they might tell us about the Stone Age. Some of the things we found were pieces of flint, parts of broken clay pots, and shells with holes in. We decided that the pots were probably used to store food in and the shells might have been part of Stone Age jewellery.

Cave Paintings

Published on 19th March

In February, Year 1 had a great time learning about the Stone Age. Mrs Pascolutti set up a cave in the classroom and we decorated the walls of the cave with some great cave art. We also looked carefully at photos of original cave paintings and we created our own by tearing and scrunching paper so they would look “cave-like”. We used charcoal to recreate the types of images that Stone Age people would have drawn.

Autumn Term

Published on 24th October

My School and Me!

In our topic this half-term, year 1 have been learning about ourselves, our school and our community. We have been explorers and some of our favourite activities have been using and making maps. First, we explored our school grounds, working out where the different features were, creating a plan of our grounds. Then we went out into our local community and used our map reading skills to think how we were going to get to different places. We spotted local landmarks – road signs, bus-stops, the church, the park, the roads where some of us lived and even where Mrs D’Auria posted her letters! We really enjoyed creating items to make a large map on our wall and added photographs of ourselves in our favourite places. We also used digi-maps, our on-line mapping software, to add labels and photos of the places that we found on our walk. We’ve learnt so much about creating and using maps. Next stop after half-term – mapping the UK!

Year 1 Stick Man

Autumn Outside

Published on 24th October

As part of our science learning this term, year 1 have been exploring our school grounds for signs of autumn. We put on our wellie boots and went into the wild area on our field. We waded through the long grass, crunched in the leaves, hunted around our bug hotel and delved into the undergrowth in search of different shaped and coloured leaves, seeds that had fallen from the trees and the perfect sticks to make our giant stick-man with!

Year 1 Gingerbread People

Gingerbread

Published on 24th October

Year 1 have been reading the story of The Gingerbread Man, so we decided to make our own. We weighed the ingredients, mixed it all together, rolled out the dough, cut out the gingerbread men and then Mrs Pascolutti cooked them. Luckily, they didn’t run away so we were able to decorate them with a lot of different toppings. Then we ate them all up! They were DELICIOIUS!
