Leo Class

Leo Class has an adapted curriculum, specifically designed so children can access topics that they would meet in Key Stage 2 at the level that they are learning at. Literacy texts are linked to these topics where possible, allowing the children to explore the content in different ways, including in their written work. With 24 topics over a 4-year rolling programme, children will meet the literacy texts and foundation subject content at some point during their time in Leo Class. Some curriculum areas, such as science, are taught in a 2-year cycle to enable to children to revisit content and build on this at a higher level when it comes around again. Skills are also threaded through the different curriculum areas, allowing children to build on these as they progress through the four years they are with us.

Maths is taught following the national curriculum for the level that the children are working at and enables children to progress at their pace, no matter how small the steps. Reading and phonics are also taught every day, with children again accessing this at their level. Like the rest of the school, we use the Bug Club phonics programme to teach phonics. Once the children are secure in phonics they move onto Accelerated Reader. Leo class teachers carefully track the progress of the children in all subjects using both regular formative assessment and a bespoke assessment system based on Pre-Keystage standards.

Access to Leo Class curriculum is flexible, and where a child is able to access a particular subject within their mainstream year group then we facilitate this. In addition, alongside our curriculum, children in Leo Class have the opportunity to join their year groups for different activities, supported by Leo class adults according to need. Examples of this include taking part in PE, art or music activities with their year group, joining a residential trip or an extra-curricular activity, and taking part in drama activities such as year group productions or musical performances.

The documents below show a general topic overview and a summary of each of the four years of the curriculum (Cycles A, B, C and D).
